Ask a stupid question…
Jan 29th, 2006 by Accidental Thinker
Well, I didn’t think it was a stupid question. It was a legitimate observation from a non-sports enthusiast who was making an honest effort to better understand what she was seeing.
I only wanted to know why the basketball players kept touching the bottoms of their shoes.
Maybe I asked rather too loudly, because I immediately sensed everyone within earshot collectively whip around and gape at me in all my appalling ignorance. You’d have thought I had just blasphemously lauded the competition. I suppose I should have known that in an area of the country where people live and breathe high school sports, ignorance is blasphemy.
Apparently, it’s common knowledge that players wipe their sweat on the bottoms of their shoes for better traction.
C’mon, surely I’m not the only one who didn’t know that???
😉
I didn’t know either!
Didn’t know. Might have never known if you hadn’t told me. I can’t stand for a basketball game to be on TV because of the squeaking sound the shoes make. Now I know why.
I have never heard of that. Whatever you do, don’t eat off that gym floor!
I had no idea but thank you , I have now been enlightened.
Your not the only one who was in the dark about that one. I didn’t know either and I have a brother and sister who both played for their college teams! I guess I’m just not very observant.
What I have seen though and just don’t get, is football players when they pat each other on their rear end. What’s with that?
I didn’t know that. I’ve never even noticed they did that. It could be because I don’t watch basketball. But, whatever.
Peach had a good question. Let’s find out why football players pat each others behinds.
Has anyone else noticed that the only people who have so far weighed in on the issue of the sweat-to-sneaker transfer are…um…GIRLS??? We’re a hopeless bunch. Im making this assumption based on my inexpert assessment of screen names…if I’m wrong, no offense intended!! 🙂 Besides, I didn’t know either Mo! Blech!
ewwww. How could anyone know that??? I wish *I* didn’t!
Knew it. But, am I the only guy here today?
I didn’t know until about five years ago, and it was my nephew I saw doing it and asked my brother. There’s also a little mat they stand on before going onto the court that does the same thing (I think) LOL
Fat people do that, too – In the mall. Just watch some time.
They wipe their sweat on the bottom of their shoes, yet when someone falls down they immediately wipe up any sweat on the floor. Makes perfect sense to me. (Not.)
I’ve never even noticed it…how’s that for observant 😉
Who Knew? Certainly not me. 🙂
